I was planning to run the Washington DC National Marathon this weekend, but because of a stress fracture have to sit it out. I have other races coming up, so no matter how upset I am that I can’t run this weekend it really isn’t that great a travesty.
I’m still in DC for work and to visit family, which means I will be able to view the race from the sidelines. When it comes to a long race, I think crowd support can make or break a runner’s performance. I know that I thrive off of applause and well wishes from the random faces in the crowd.
I love having support form my family and friends and thank them whenever I can for it, but the added comradery from people who don’t even know who you are is special. It serves as proof that the running community isn’t just about running alone, but it is a network of connected individuals who want to see everybody succeed at their own personal goals.
